The reasons why we celebrate black history month

Black History Month is celebrated because it supports and celebrates the huge contribution that black men and woman have made to the world.  For most part of history, it has been known that black history has been ignored, side-lined and often people are not aware of the many contributions black men and woman have made to society. It now questioned whether black is history should be taught all year round instead of just one month.

Black history month enables individuals both old and young to gain a broader understanding of black histories, going beyond racism and slavery to also spotlight black achievement.  The UK’s first Black History Month took place in 1987. Black History Month is a great opportunity for people from all backgrounds to educate themselves on black history and the often-overlooked people who have made a difference to the country.

The UK’s first Black History Month took place in 1987. It was rallied for by Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who had served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London Council and created a collaboration to get it underway.

Nurturing Reconciliation

The Path

ermit me an observation.  Some of the most articulate African-American voices I interact with are often given a platform to speak to White people about issues of race and racial reconciliation.  White culture, and in particular, White Christian culture, is coming to terms with the fact that the gospel demands that we share meals with Christians of every cultural background (see Galatians 2).  In light of this, articulate African American voices are sought after by some White Christians…  but those voices are quite often only invited to speak about one thing: race and racial reconciliation.
